July 22nd, 2007
I survived my first SF earthquake on Friday, but apparently a 4.2 on the Richter scale isn’t enough to rattle me from deep 4:42 AM sleep. It is enough to knock my Granholm poster off the wall and wake up my housemates, but certainly not the “Big One”.

January 2nd, 2007Just created a Flickr account to accessorize my new digital camera! Here are some photos from an incredible New Years bonanza with some of U of M Dems/allies of yesteryear for my first trial run…
A midwesterner at heart, apparently
January 2nd, 2007Little over a month after I slipped up and referred to soda as pop (for the first time ever) to a few close friends, my suspicions have been confirmed. According to this accent quiz, my 3 years in Michigan and 2 parents with midwestern roots have left their mark on me… check it out:
| What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Inland North
You may think you speak “Standard English straight out of the dictionary” but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like “Are you from Wisconsin?” or “Are you from Chicago?” Chances are you call carbonated drinks “pop.” |

The results were more accurate when I responded that I pronounce “marry” differently from “Mary” and “merry”, but I really don’t!
Bah Humbug: Snow for show-and-tell?
December 29th, 2006It’s been a fantastic winter break back in CT, but one thing has been awry: where’s the snow?!
The temperature’s hardly even made it into the thirties around here, Christmas was a washout, and the annual Ruth family trip to the ski slopes of Vermont called off. Perhaps it’s a fluke, but the experts on climate change all seem to agree that more winters like this are on the horizon.
I hope this extremely mild holiday season will serve as a wake up call to those skeptical about global warming’s impact on their own quality of life. During a season in which we consume obscene amounts of energy to drive to the malls and adorn trees (over 30 million were cut down and sold in the U.S. alone) with strings of light, the connection could not be any clearer.
Last night I saw Hummer’s new commercial in which a kid returns from his family’s Hummer adventure in a winter wonderland with a huge snowball to show his classmates during show-and-tell. I never thought of snow as something worthy of show-and-tell (certainly not in New England, or Michigan), but so long as we keep driving big bad Hummers (I admit to driving a tank myself), I fear that’s where we’re headed.
